World Boccia has confirmed Zagreb and Astana as the venues for the two decisive qualification tournaments that will help determine the field for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

The Croatian capital will host the World Boccia Teams and Pairs Paralympic Qualification Tournament from February 23-29, 2028, before Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, stages the Individual Paralympic Qualification Tournament from June 20-26.

World Boccia has now finalised the qualification process and timetable for athletes hoping to secure their places at the Games, with a combination of international regional championships, world rankings and the two tournaments determining the final allocations.

The road to LA will begin with performances counting towards the World Boccia Teams, Pairs and Individual Ranking Lists from January 1, 2026. The ranking period will close on December 12, 2027.

The individual qualification tournament in Astana will offer three qualification slots for the Los Angeles Games in each of the eight individual medal events, covering men’s and women’s BC1, BC2, BC3 and BC4.

Each event will have a maximum of 10 entries, with no more than two athletes per National Paralympic Committee (NPC).

The qualification allocation includes a host slot, subject to ranking requirements, up to eight places determined through world rankings and one bipartite slot awarded by the World Boccia Competition Committee.

For ranking qualification, places will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible athletes or nations not already qualified, using the World Ranking List published after the final ranking event of 2027.

Paris 2024

Athletes must appear on the Individual World Ranking List as of December 31, 2027, to be eligible to compete in Astana.

There are also restrictions on athletes and nations already represented in the Paralympic field. Athletes who have already qualified for Los Angeles 2028 will not be eligible to enter the individual tournament, while countries must remain within the Paralympic limits of two athletes per class and 10 athletes overall.

The host allocation will be conditional on the athlete being ranked inside the world’s top 25. Bipartite places will be awarded in accordance with the criteria set out in the World Boccia Competition and Ranking Manual.

The qualification calendar will also feature a series of major regional competitions during 2027.

The World Boccia Africa Regional Championships will take place in Cape Town from July 5-12, followed by the European Para Championships in Geneva from August 2-15. The Parapan American Games will be held in Lima from August 20-29, with the World Boccia Asia/Oceania Championships scheduled for Beijing from September 4-12.

The European Para Championships will be recognised as the European regional championships for qualification purposes.

The final stages of the allocation process will take place during the first half of 2028, with World Boccia confirming teams and pairs qualification allocations to NPCs on March 15.

National committees will then have until May 1 to confirm their use of those places and their team and pair compositions, with unused slots due to be reallocated on May 4.

Astana

Individual qualification allocations based on the 2027 World Ranking List and the Individual Compensation Allocation will be confirmed on May 7, with NPCs required to respond by May 15. Any unused places will be reallocated on May 20.

Following the individual qualification tournament in Astana, World Boccia will confirm the allocation of places on July 1. NPCs must confirm their use of those places by July 7, with any remaining unused slots due to be reallocated on July 15.

The final deadline for NPCs to submit sport entry forms to the Los Angeles 2028 Organising Committee is July 24, 2028.

With Zagreb and Astana now confirmed as the two qualification venues, athletes and national federations can plan their campaigns around the ranking period, regional championships and the decisive tournaments that will shape the boccia field for Los Angeles.
